What is Country Furniture?

Country furniture refers to a certain style of furniture that traditionally was found in rural areas. French provincial furniture and Rustic furniture are other descriptions.

Farmhouse tables, stout farmhouse chairs, lighter chairs, often with cane or rush, sideboards, welsh and other dressers, cabinets, free standing butchers-block type kitchen islands. More often than not painted, the pieces tend to be made of oak or pine, and frequently are painted.

What is Folk Art?

The term Folk Art refers to a pretty wide range of things but can generally be described as items which almost the opposite of Fine Art, in other words, items or objects that are made by local people that reflect the world around them. Most Folk artists have no formal artistic training and are self taught.. Folk Art includes, for example, traditional wooden or metal toys, pub signs, paintings, sculptures, old shop signage, portraits and frames, basic furniture, dolls houses, and so on.

There are many different origins of folk art, from Aboriginals in Australia to American folk art from the colonial period, Asian and African folk art…in fact just about any culture or social group has it’s own local folk art.

I make repairs to country furniture using a variety of skills and methods, including replacing or mending the wood if it is chipped, broken or missing. French polishing techniques, colour matching and patination skills are used.

Repairing and restoring folk art well is a skill which can only be garnered by many years practise and experiment. I have long been interested in Folk Art and am indeed a folk artist myself. Most of the Folk Art I deal with is British folk art, such as portrait frames, pub signage and so on.

I can assess and implement restorations to a wide variety of country and folk art objects using many of my skills, such as gilding, polishing, graining and marbling.
