Gilding could be called 'golding', because it describes the application of a fine layer of gold to a surface. The surface is most usually metal, but wood, paper (books), ceramics, pottery and plastics, and other materials can be gilded.
Historically, gilding has taken place in many cultures, especially in the oriental countries and has been recorded as far back as the ancient Egyptians.
There are many different methods of gilding involving different chemical or mechanical processes.
• Gilt mirrors, tables and chairs can all be repaired and matched
in, using carved wood or moulded resin, gesso or bole (clay) in many colours
with gold to match.
• These repairs are then aged and patinated to match the rest of
the piece.
